Martin Lewis issues warning to anyone who's booked a holiday for this year

The Money Saving Expert has sent an important message to Brits when it comes to booking their holidays

Martin Lewis is back to make sure you're all geared up and prepared for the holiday season.

The Money Saving Expert himself took a clip from one of his popular ITV episodes to share with users on TikTok, as a 'very important' factor to bear in mind before travelling to your spring or summer getaway.

It's around about the time where Brits will be scouring package holiday sites and airline flights for the best deals, looking to get a sunny trip booked as the UK returns to a miserable spot of weather after a week of 'false spring'.

Now, Lewis has urged Brits to make sure that they purchase travel insurance.

While this might be a no-brainer to some, he highlighted that it shouldn't be bought the day before you fly, but instead, as soon as you buy tickets.

This is to ensure that you're covered on every front when it comes to things going wrong, and requiring a refund.

He explained on his Money Saving Expert show: "Travel insurance is not just to cover you while you're away. It's also very important to cover you in case something happens before you go that stops you going."

Lewis went on, revealing that he has 'a rule' when it comes to this: "You should get your travel insurance ASAB: as soon as you book.

"Many people have already booked. If you don't have your travel insurance and if it's your holidays booked, do it right now."

He admitted that he gets the same question every year, though from different people, about finding out about a health condition before their holiday, and being left unable to go on their trip, or get a refund because of it.

Lewis says that he's 'impotent' in response, as they would have been covered through their travel insurance.

The money expert highlighted: "Do not get your travel insurance the day before you go. You get your travel insurance ASAB."

His co-presenter then read out a real message that he got in 2024, that said: "I booked a holiday for Christmas last year but then I was then medically advised not to fly.

"The holiday was already paid for and I hadn't taken out any Travel insurance. I'm now being told I've lost all the money for the holiday. Is there anything that can be done?"

Lewis begged audience members and viewers not to be the person this summer.

He gave another example: "If you bought a tennis racket and you broke your arm, you can't say to them, I want a refund cause my arm's broken. The tennis racket still works, the flight still work, the hotel still works."

Lewis said that this is exactly what insurance is for, as it is with cars and health.

While many airlines and package holiday websites offer insurance, you can also buy it from insurance websites.

Users took to the comments, with one writing: "Insurance is like £16 pp for 7 nights at most destinations with Love Holidays. I don’t understand why people don’t just pay it; to be safe rather than sorry."

And another admitted: "There’s me always doing my insurance at the airport departure lounge," with laughing emojis, while a third simply stated: "Start the cover from the date you book."
