There can be all kinds of tense situations while travelling by plane and they're almost always to do with fellow passengers.

From those who recline their chairs so they're basically asleep in your lap, to others who can't cope with five minutes of hearing a baby cry - there's always something happening.

Now, one woman has said she became involved in a super awkward situation when she refused to give up her seat for a toddler.

Writing on Reddit, the woman explained that she's 34-years-old and 'obese'.

While she's trying to lose weight, and is making progress, she booked an extra plane seat during a recent journey.

While she hoped it would make for a more comfortable plane ride, she was left facing a rather awkward situation when a mother on the flight wanted her son to sit in the seat that the woman had paid for.

She wrote: "I’m going over to see my brother and his husband for Christmas across the country and because I’m fat, I booked an extra seat so everyone can be more comfortable. I know it sucks having to pay for an extra seat but it is what it is.

According to the woman, everything had went swimmingly until a woman came to her row with her son 'who appeared to be about a year old'.

"She told me to squeeze in to one seat so her son could sit in the other. She told me, not asked." she said.

The woman continued to explain that she'd told the mum that she was sorry, but she had actually already paid for the seat.

"I told her no and that I paid for this seat for the extra space," she said.

"She makes a big fuss over it, which got the flight attendant’s attention. She told the flight attendant I was stealing the seat from her son, then I showed my boarding passes, proving that I, in fact paid for the extra seat.

"The flight attendant asked me if I could try to squeeze in, but I said no, that I wanted the extra seat I paid for.

"The boy, who the mom said is 18 months old was supposed to sit in her lap so he could do just that.

"The flight attendant eventually told the mom to put her son in her lap. I got dirty looks and passive-aggressive remarks from her for the entire flight and I do feel a little bad because the boy looked hard to control."

After reflecting on what had happened and wondering if she was in the wrong, the woman asked the Reddit community for advice.

However, they were quick to praise her for sticking to her guns.

"You paid for your seat. This woman was trying to steal a free seat for her kid. If it’s too hard to have him on her lap, buy a seat for him," one person wrote.

While another said: "Some people are so entitled you paid for the seats, you should not have to give one of them up."

And a third said: "If she wanted her child to have his own seat, she should have paid for one."
