British family reveal how they sold their home in 24 hours to leave the UK and start new life costing just £35 a day

Josh and Katie said they were spending twice as much as they are now each month while living in Sheffield

A family-of-four has told how they flogged their home in 24 hours before leaving the UK to start a new life - and now live on just £35 a day.

Parents Josh and Katie, both 33, left their three-bedroom property in Sheffield last month with their belongings stuffed into just four backpacks and haven't looked back.

Along with their two children, aged seven and three, the couple have embarked on a round-the-world adventure with no final destination in sight.

The mum and dad explained that they were first bitten by the 'travel bug' after spending a year travelling Australia back in 2015, before their kids came along.

And after enjoying a family holiday to Mexico in January this year, it prompted the pair to finally take the leap and stick their house on the market.

Josh and Katie said the two-week trip made them realise they could 'get so much more for the same money' when travelling instead of splashing out on a pricey stay at an all-inclusive resort.

They did some 'research' while in Mexico and calculated 'how much money they could make stretch' as nomads.

"We just kind of sat down and thought, the amount of money we spent on a two-week all-inclusive, you can get so much more for your money if you look into it," Josh said.

So, the Brit family put their house up for sale in April this year - and in just 24 hours, someone snapped it up.

They then sold 'everything you can imagine' on sites such as Facebook Marketplace and Vinted before booking flights to Thailand.

"We're taking four backpacks and that’s literally it," Josh said. "Everything we own we sold. We’ve been on Vinted to sell the clothes, and sold our beds, sofa, TV and vehicles."

The dad, an exterior cleaner, and Katie boarded a flight with their two kids from Manchester on 22 August and say they have since settled into their new life overseas swimmingly.

The couple reckon that they will spend about £500-a-month on accommodation, while they're currently living off a daily budget of roughly £35 a day during their time in Thailand.

Josh and Katie estimate that it will cost somewhere between £1,500 to £2,000 each month to sustain their new lifestyle, explaining these expenses will be subsidised by the cash from their house sale.

It might sound like a lot of money to some, but it's a bargain in the eyes of this couple - who said their monthly spending in the UK was almost double and totalled up to £4,000.

Katie, a hairdresser, explained she and her partner had initially considered emigrating to Australia on a sponsored visa, but decided against it due to the 'amount of hours' she would have to work.

"I didn't want to work five days a week and not see the kids," she said. "In places like southeast Asia, you can stretch your money.

"We haven’t got a route planned. We just want the simple way of life and to spend quality time together as a family. I’m pretty chill with it, the only bit I worry about is missing my family.

"If I could pick them up and take them with me, I would. It’s the unknown to us all but that’s what excites us. We know as a family as long as we have each other we can conquer anything.

"It just feels surreal and it's an adventure - even now sat here we don’t feel like we're thousands of miles away," she added.

"It's like, 'God, we've done it, we're here'. The kids are just thriving already as well."

The couple intend for their children to 'learn other things' outside of the national curriculum, but said their youngsters will also be 'following Oakwood Academy'.

Josh said the website is 'supplying them with online resources' to educate their kids, while a private tutor is also 'checking in with them weekly'.

The family are set to visit their next destination in southeast Asia on 29 September, but are loving the 'free' life so much that they have not got anywhere else booked.
