Sydney Harbour Bridge Closed After Massive Fire

A car has flipped and burst into flames after a three-vehicle collision on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. 

Earlier this morning, Police believed the Toyota Kluge was stolen from the Suxxex and Goulburn streets just moments before. 

Police said the owner of the Toyota Kluge was changing a tyre in the Sydney CBD when a man approached him about the car. Soon after, a fight broke out before the man stole the vehicle and began toward the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Detective Superintendent Rohan Cramsie told reporters: “There was a short scuffle which ensued, and then the man got into the Kluger and drove it away headed towards the Harbour Bridge.”

Detective Cramsie said dashcam footage that emerged of the collision was ‘extremely confronting’ and ‘horrifying to watch’.

"I can only begin to imagine what the other drivers would have witnessed and experienced when they saw that vehicle coming towards them, which we would allege would be above the speed limit." 

In the video below, the Toyota Kluge is seen speeding down south of the bridge, swerving into multiple lanes, before crashing into two vehicles heading in the opposite direction, which led the SVU to burst into flames along the bridge.

Miraculously, no one has died due to the collision, but two drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One of the drivers was pulled out of his van by motorists after it caught fire. The injured man was then taken to St Vincent's Hospital and is stable.

Detective Cramsie said the crash was an extremely serious incident, and those involved ‘have been extremely lucky to get away with their lives’.

He noted the courageous bystanders who saw the accident and swung into action immediately helping those injured from the collision.

“Those people that stopped their cars and got out and helped, they’ve been extremely brave and that’s not the type of thing that just anybody does”.

He also added that the man responsible for the crash and alleged stolen vehicle is currently under police guard at Royal North Shore Hospital.

“We’d certainly ask anybody who has witnessed the (alleged) stealing of that Kluger this morning to come forward.”
