Shocking CCTV footage caught the moment the farmer was attacked by the wolf in the east of Russia.

The man and the wolf ended up involved in a fight in the snow, before he grabbed the animal by its throat and held it.

The man can be seen repeatedly striking the wolf, but local media reports say he didn't have any weapons during the scrap.

One report said: "The farmer had no time to pick up his rifle, and went into a bare-handed fight with the animal."

The report went on to say the man was worried the wolf would attack his cattle having already killed two dogs and attacking a horse.

Mass animal vaccinations have been carried out in the village of Novotroitskoye, southwest of Birobidzhan, capital of Russia's Jewish Autonomous Region.

Regional chief vet Galina Dzyuba said tests were underway to establish if the wolf was rabid.

He said: "Soon we should know the exact reason for the attack.

"Did it happen because the wolf was running short of food or was sick?"

Locals say wolf attacks on dogs and farm animals are becoming more common due to the destruction of the forests in the area.

One villager said: "The woods are being destroyed and burned down, so wolves are losing their usual prey.

"This is entirely man's fault.

"It's like the wolves have been left homeless, this is why they are getting out of the woods."

Earlier this year, a man in Australia managed to fight off a brown snake while doing 76mph down the highway.

James Canhan was pulled over by Queensland Police for speeding on the Dawson Highway in the state's north.

He told the officer who stopped him that he was trying to protect himself from a deadly serpent that had slithered in through the gear shaft.

James managed to keep his car on the road while also fending off the snake with a knife.

Police decided not to fine him over the incident.
