After ten months of keeping us all on tenterhooks, the story of Charlotte the virgin stingray ended in tragedy.
The aquatic animal gained an army of fans and inspired countless memes after her story began sweeping social media, as her miraculous conception was quite remarkable.
She called an aquarium in North Carolina home and was cared for by experts who make up Team Ecco, who are based out of the Aquarium and Shark Lab in the US state.
Before she became famous online, Charlotte lived a pretty average life - but that all changed in September 2023 after she began growing suspiciously swollen.

Staff at the aquarium performed an ultrasound on the stingray and discovered that she was pregnant with four pups.
Take a look at this:
Brenda Ramer, the aquarium's founder and executive director, told the The News and Observer at the time: "We were all like, ‘Shut the back door! There’s no way'."
"We thought we were overfeeding her," Ramer added. "But we were overfeeding her because she has more mouths to feed."
But as Charlotte didn't share her tank with any males, experts were left baffled - so, naturally, she then became known as the animal world's equivalent to the Virgin Mary.
Various theories flitted around about how the rust-coloured round stingray ended up with child, before scientists concluded that her pregnancy must have been down to a phenomena known as parthenogenesis.
This is a form of asexual reproduction that occur species such reptiles, insects and some fish, where a female of the species can produce an embryo despite the absence of sperm fertilising her eggs.
Team ECCO shared regular updates on Charlotte's progress to keep animal-lovers in the loop on how she was getting on, but all of a sudden, things went a bit quiet.

In May 2024, her carers then broke the news that the stingray had sadly developed a 'rare reproductive disease that negatively impacted her reproductive system'.
The team said there was little knowledge of the condition but they were actively researching it and hoped their findings would 'positively contribute to science and be of benefit to other rays in the future'.
Tragically just a month later, Team ECCO announced that medics had found that Charlotte was 'no longer pregnant due to her reproductive disease'.
In June 2024, the aquarium explained that she was still 'content' and continued to stick to her 'normal routine', while thanking people around the globe for their 'continued support and concern'.
"The medical team preformed their bi-weekly in person assessment last night at the aquarium and reported that Charlotte is stable and continues to show no decrease in appetite or activity," the statement from Team ECCO said.
"The medical experts are reviewing additional ultrasounds and testing that have been collected and sent out for recommendations for treatment options and we will collaborate on a medical care plan for Charlotte based on the entire medical file, and options available to her."

Sadly, further heartbreak followed - as just a few weeks after her pregnancy loss, Charlotte herself passed away.
Team ECCO said in a post on 1 July, 2024: "We are sad to announce, after continuing treatment with her medical care team and specialist, our ray Charlotte passed away today."
The short statement thanked fans for their 'love and support', but didn’t go into further detail about Charlotte's death.
Still, Charlotte's legacy lives on - as every so often, you'll see her name crop up on social media once again.
And let's have it right - how many other stingrays do you know who have inspired a Saturday Night Live sketch and a made it into Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue on his hit talk show?
A true legend. Rest in peace, Charlotte.
