Australian actor Russell Crowe has been awarded the Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made For Television at the Golden Globes - and he used the opportunity to highlight an issue with the bushfires currently sweeping his home country.

The star won the gong for his leading role as Roger Ailes in The Loudest Voice.

Award presenters Jennifer Aniston and Reece Witherspoon announced that Crowe couldn't be at the glitzy ceremony in America, however, because he was at home protecting his family from the bushfires.

Even though he wasn't able to be in the room, he allowed Aniston to read out a message on his behalf and let the world know his thoughts on the crisis that has gripped Australia for the past few months.

Reading the message, Friends star Aniston said: "Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change based.

"We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy, and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is. That way, we all have a future."

Crowe wasn't the only person highlighting the issue of the bushfires at one of Hollywood's biggest events.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, who have already donated a whopping $500,000 to help firefighters, said they were devastated by what was happening back home.

Big Little Lies star Kidman said: "There's enormous strength in the country right now in terms of camaraderie and helping each other. Obviously, we're over here, so we're going, 'What can we do to help?' But everyone has been so concerned, they know about it and there's been such incredible support. So, thank you."

Her husband, Keith Urban, added: "There's a lot of people who have lost so much down there already and there's more to come, too. We're not out of the woods; this is just really the beginning of summer. But people are doing amazing work down there. We want to thank everyone who's been working so hard."

Cate Blanchett also told the audience: "I want to do a special callout to the volunteer firefighters who have been at the centre of battling the climate disaster in Australia. And of course when one country faces a climate disaster we all face a climate disaster. We're in it together."
