Tom Selleck undoubtedly improved someone's 2020 after he left a very generous $2,0201,500) tip for a server at a New York restaurant.

Donnie Wahlberg, who stars in Blue Bloods with Selleck, shared the kind gesture on Twitter, where he wrote: "I found out that my TV Dad Tom Selleck has generously accepted the #2020TipChallenge at Elios Upper East Side! Love ya dad.

"I didn't start it but I'm proud to be part of it. To those who gave even the smallest extra amount this year - THANK YOU."

In the photos shared in the tweet, a note from Selleck can be seen to read: "For Elios, I am honoring my friend Donnie Wahlberg's 'tip challenge' with my sincere hope for a better 2020. Thank you all."

Wahlberg has himself took part in the challenge - all the way back in January.

Posting a shot of his receipt on Twitter, his wife Jenny wrote:

He then decided to show off his generous side once again just last month, when he visited Marshland restaurant in Massachusetts.

Posting a photo of his receipt, the restaurant's Instagram page wrote: "A very special thank you to our friend @donniewahlberg! When asked about it all he said was 'who's up next?!'"

Speaking to PEOPLE about the hefty tip, restaurant owner Marty Finch said: "Donnie has been here before in the past and he always asks for Denise.

"He had his normal order: steak tips with some grilled asparagus and some poached eggs. She always knows what he wants.

"When he left he just said, 'Denise, you're all set. The payment is on the table'.

"She always says he's a very good tipper anyway but her jaw dropped, to say the least, when she saw that amount of tip."

Other celebrities, including Harry Styles, have also taken on the challenge this year.

The trend reportedly kicked off on 29 December 2019, when a customer left a server at Thunder Bay Restaurant in Alpena, Michigan a $2,020 tip for their $23 (£17) meal, as well as writing 'Happy New Year' and '2020 Tip Challenge' across the bill.

Server Danielle Franzoni told The Alpena News: "Things like this don't happen to people like me."

She added: "They don't know nothing about my story, they don't know where I've come from, they don't know how hard it's been.

"They're really just doing this out of the kindness of their heart."
