Chris Rock Criticised For 'White Guy' Joke While Presenting Oscars 2022 Award

He's been called out on Twitter.

Chris Rock has been criticised for making a ‘white guy’ joke while presenting the 2022 Oscars

The comedian claimed that the film Summer of Soul had been made by "Questlove…and four white guys” as he presented the award for Best Documentary Feature at The Academy Awards.

In a now-deleted tweet, one of the movie’s producers, Joseph Patel, called the comedian an ‘absolute f***ing d***’ for making the tasteless joke.

Patel went on to explain how he was ‘one of a handful of South Asians to have ever won an Oscar in the history of the award’ and will ‘probably never’ be able to re-watch the now-tainted historical moment.

He wrote on Twitter: “We were in shock walking to the stage not because of winning, but because we, too, were still trying to make sense of what happened.”

Of course, he was in part referring to the moment that Will Smith slapped Rock for making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair.

Patel then called out Smith for his ‘selfish’ behaviour which ‘robbed the category of its moment’ and was meant to be ‘a loud, enthusiastic cheer for a celebrated film’.

He also voiced his anger towards Rock for failing to recognise the producers' culture behind the award-winning film.

Patel continued: “What I didn’t hear in that moment walking to stage but was told of afterwards is what Chris Rock said when reading our name from the winner’s card. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL F***????? [sic]”

Patel explained that “the reason that makes me SO SO VERY ANGRY is because I was so proud to be one of a handful of South Asians to have ever won an Oscar in the history of the award”.

The producer also added that he was “the third South Asian to win that night” following Riz Ahmed and Aneil Karia’s success with The Long Goodbye which won Best Live Action Short.

“That’s never happened before! And it’s meaningful! It’s history!”

“I got back home to New York last night and saw the ceremony on my DVR and didn’t have the stomach to watch it. I probably never will. Thank you, Chris – You absolute f***ing d***,” Patel added.

The producer also responded to other Twitter users who similarly called out the comedian for the inappropriate quip.
