Over 500 postcodes eligible for cold weather payments from government

As the UK continues to freeze, check to see if you are one of over 500 postcodes that are eligible for cold weather payments this winter.

It is a bit of an understatement to say that the weather has been rather chilly here in the UK in the past couple of weeks.

Temperatures in the last week got as freezing as -15C, making it colder here than it is in Iceland.

And with the cost of living crisis continuing to impact millions of Brits, heating up the house has turned into a luxury for many.

To help with that, the UK government has provided grants to help with costs such as the energy bills.

This new one is known as the Cold Weather Payments, with over 500 postcodes in the UK eligible for payments of up to £25 for every week of sub-zero temperatures.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will hand out the money to help households who are struggling to pay for their energy bills this winter.

These payments will be paid into people's bank accounts within 14 days.

So where exactly in the UK are these cold weather payments being handed out?

Advert

Well, the payments are being dished out in locations where residents experience continuous below freezing weather.

There are many areas in the UK with postcodes eligible from Birmingham to Carlise, and London to Swansea.

Unfortunately, people in Scotland will not be able to claim for the cold weather payments, though they are eligible for a Winter Heating Payment of up to £50.

Households can apply to get £25 for each seven-day period of freezing temperatures until 31 March 2023.

Some households will even get two payments of £25 after the recent Baltic weather in the UK triggered 286 postcodes this week.

Once approved, the payment will be made into your bank account automatically within 14 days.

However, alongside where you are situated in the UK, you may need to pass other criteria to be successful.

The gov.uk website states that you may get cold weather payments if you're getting:

  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit
  • Support for Mortgage Interest

It also states that depending on your circumstances, you may need to meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Have a disability or be in receipt of pension premium
  • Have a child who is disabled
  • Be in receipt of child tax credit that includes a disability or severe disability element
  • Have a severe or enhanced disability premium
  • Be in receipt of a limited capability for work amount
  • Have a child under five living with you

If you meet all the criteria there is no need to claim and the Cold Weather Payment will be paid automatically. If you think you're eligible but don't receive the payment, you'll need to let the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus know.
