Courtney Love has spoken out in support of Johnny Depp, claiming he saved her life in 1995. Watch here:

Depp, 58, is suing ex-wife Amber Heard, 36, for $50 million (£38.2 million) in a defamation lawsuit over domestic abuse claims she made in a 2018 article in The Washington Post.

With the trial set to enter its sixth and final week, singer Love has revealed that Pirates of the Caribbean actor Depp gave her CPR after she overdosed outside The Viper Room in Hollywood, not long after the death of her husband, Kurt Cobain, who killed himself in 1994.

In a video shared on Instagram, Love said: "I don't really wanna make judgments publicly. I just want to tell you that Johnny gave me CPR in 1995 when I overdosed outside The Viper Room."

Love and Cobain had one child together, named Frances, and Love said Depp reached out to her when she was growing up to offer his support.

The 57-year-old continued: "Johnny, when I was on crack and Frances was having to suffer through that with all these social workers, wrote her a four-page letter that she's never showed me.

"Then he sent limos to her school where all the social workers were crawling around, again, unasked, for her and all her friends to go to both 'Pirates' [Pirates of the Caribbean].

"He did it a bunch of times. He gave her her own seat [at the premieres] with her name on it.

"I've never seen one of those 'Pirates' movies, but [Frances] loved them. You know, she said to me when she was 13, 'Mama, he saved my life.' And she said it again."

Having shared the glowing endorsement of Depp, Love added that she has 'empathy' for Heard.

"I've been the most hated woman in America," she said.

"I've been the most hated woman in the world before TikTok and it's a really... I have a lot of empathy for what that must feel like for Amber. F**k man, wow, can you imagine being her?

"But if you use a movement for your own personal gain, and you inhabit queer feminist intersectional spaces, and you abuse that moment, then I hope justice gets served whatever it is."

Depp is suing Heard for $50m (£38.2m), and she has issued a counterclaim for $100m (£76.4m).

The pair began dating after meeting on the set of 2011 film The Rum Diary and got married in 2015. Heard obtained a restraining order against Depp the following year and they finalised their divorce in 2017.

Asked about her decision to file for divorce from Depp in May 2016, Heard said in court last week: "I knew if I didn't I'd likely not literally survive.

"I was so scared that it was going to end really badly for me and I really didn't want to leave him, I loved him so much.

"I would have done anything but I couldn't do that one thing, I couldn't stay."

In 2020, Depp lost a libel case brought against The Sun over an article in which he was labelled a 'wife beater'.

He has denied all allegations of abuse.

The trial continues.
