We all want to keep our skin looking good, especially as we get older, but there's more to think about than just expensive face creams.

The position you sleep in can impact the rate at which your skin is aging massively, an NHS doctor has revealed, and there's one specific position to completely avoid.

Dr Raj Arora, who shares health tips on Instagram and has appeared on This Morning, outlined a number of habits which can make your skin appear older than it is, as well as small changes to make to your routine to help prevent aging.

"Small habits big impact over time. It’s not always about what you add to your routine sometimes it’s what you need to stop," she explained to her followers.

Sleeping on your side is very common and comfy for the majority of people, but Dr Arora revealed that if you're prone to sleeping on your side, this could unfortunately be making your skin age quicker.

Consistently pressing your face against a pillow for hours at a time can causes 'sleep wrinkles', or what are also known as compression lines, due to pressure and friction.

These lines can eventually become permanent and develop into deeper wrinkles or skin creases.

If you're someone who has a favourite side to sleep on, it could be time to rethink your routine.

Consistently sleeping on one side can impact facial asymmetry and cause one side of your face to develop deeper lines or appear more aged, especially as skin begins to lose elasticity over time.

Sleeping on your back is the most beneficial if you're wanting to prevent wrinkles, according to sleep neurologist Rachel Salas, M.D.

If you do wind up sleeping on your side, it is advised to add a silk or satin pillow case to your bed, as these can reduce the impact on the skin in contrast to cotton.

In her post, Dr Arora also outlined three further tips to help slow down aging and they're all easy to incorporate into your daily routine.

Ensuring you wear SPF daily is a must as it helps to decrease the damage caused by UV rays. Sun damage is a known cause of aging and can lead to wrinkles, uneven skin and loss of collagen.

Being properly hydrated is key to maintaining youthful skin as it helps to improve elasticity, while being dehydrated can make skin appear dull and speed up the aging process.

Dehydration can cause skin to appear dull and speed up the aging process, so it's important to ensure you're properly hydrated

Lastly, Dr Arora advises giving up vaping as this has a major impact on your skin. Nicotine restricts blood flow, deprives the skin of oxygen and reduces elastin production.
