Heinz finally settles debate that ketchup belongs in the fridge

Heinz has set the record straight about where you're actually meant to store your ketchup.

Heinz has set the record straight about where you're actually meant to store your ketchup.

It's a debate which has caused housemates to rage, my mum to sneakily relocate the bottle when she thinks I'm not looking and me to alternate locations each week to see which makes the ketchup taste better.

Thankfully, households will be divided no more, with Heinz finally weighing in on the official correct place to store your tomato sauce.

If you keep it in the fridge with many other of your condiments - mayonnaise isn't up for debate - ketchup is a tantalising zing of tomato to accompany your fresh-out-the-fryer chips.

If you keep it in the cupboard, you get a nice room temperature juicy sauce which blends with the heat of the steam rising off your burger as you smush a bun on top.

According to a poll conducted by Heinz on Twitter 53.6 of the 2,342 people who voted believe ketchup should be stored in the fridge opposed to 46.4 percent who believe the cupboard is the correct location for the red sauce.

But where should ketchup actually be stored? It's a question we've nearly been getting into food fights over for years and the only voice who can really speak on the issue with any authority has to be Heinz.

Drum roll please.

The debate has been ongoing for years.

Taking to Twitter, Heinz - American food processing company - has had its say... and ultimately, as the master of ketchup, what it says goes.

The tweet reads: "FYI: Ketchup. goes. in. the. fridge!!!"

According to the product information on the bottles themselves, we should indeed be refrigerating the ketchup after opening it, and consuming the bottle within eight weeks - although I definitely have a few bottles which have been lingering for a good few months - or do I dare say, years.

Heinz has had the final say.

Twitter has exploded as quickly as a bottle of ketchup does if you've kept it in a pressurised environment for too long over Heinz's tweet.

Flooding to the post, ketchup lovers far and wide have rained in to give their thoughts, with some cupboard choosers outraged by Heinz's ruling, fiercely defending their decision to consume lukewarm tomato sauce.

One user argued: "No it doesn't. You stick to production and I'll deal with the consumption."

"Put it in the fridge or I dunno how to function," Heinz replied.

"Never, ever has it ever gone in my fridge, nor anybody elses," another user wrote.

Heinz said: "It does and they do. Case (fridge) closed."

And a final tweet reads: "So why is it on the shelves in supermarkets and shops then?"

"Where do you keep your soft drinks, Dave?" Heinz responded.
