Two Men Make Earth Sandwich By Putting Bread On Opposite Sides Of The Planet

The worked out the opposite from the longitude and latitude

Two lads have created what is known as an 'Earth sandwich' - which, quite simply, means placing slices of bread at precisely opposite points of the planet.

The man who created the sandwich was based in New Zealand, and managed to find another to put a second slice of bread directly on the other side of the planet, which happened to be in Spain.

Etienne Naude, from Auckland, had said that he wanted to make one for years, but finding someone who could get to the exact opposite point (or antipodal point, if you want to be scientific about it) proved difficult.

Reddit

After trying for sometime, he found someone on Reddit and together, the men used longitude and latitude to make sure they were exactly opposite each other.

It meant that there was about 12,724km of earth between the slices, and about 20,000km between them - they literally couldn't have been further apart.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Naude said: "It was quite hard to organise since it's 12-hour time difference. And there's lots of things to arrange, such as the kind of bread, the time, the [precise] location, et cetera."

Although he only needed to travel a few hundred metres, his new Spanish pal had to travel about 11km - not far to travel for this groundbreaking bit of science - I think we can call it that?

He added: "It's quite tough to find a spot which isn't water on the New Zealand end - and where public roads or paths intersect in both sides."

As if he hadn't put enough effort in, Naude even used a laser cutter to burn a design on to 20 slices of bread to mark his spot in New Zealand, his friend in Spain used nine slices of unmarked bread to make sure the spot was covered.

The photo showing both men, their bread and their co-ordinates, was posted on Reddit.

Mr Naude said in response to a user on Reddit said: "Holidays give me lots of free time to do strange things like this."

However, one user did say that with their longitude and latitude calculation, they were within one foot of the precise opposite point.

There's always one - and this was no easy task as it was, as Naude explained.

What makes it even more difficult is the fact that only 15 percent of land on the planet has an antipodal point that is also on land.

The UK, Australia and the majority of the US don't have any - the other side of the world is ocean.
