JK Simmons Explained Why He Got Absolutely Shredded And It Wasn't For A Role

JK Simmons Explained Why He Got Absolutely Shredded And It Wasn't For A Role

The Spiderman actor has revealed his hit motivation behind absolutely smashing the gym

JK Simmons will most likely be enjoying his birthday today (9 January) a bit more than the typical 67-year-old as he appears to have been keeping himself in absolutely amazing shape.

It's common knowledge that a lot of actors will bulk up if they're featuring in an upcoming action film, however, Simmons, who is three years from reaching the big 70, appears to have other motivations for keeping shredded.

In 2016, his personal trainer Aaron Williamson posted a few snaps of their workout on Instagram and it went completely viral.

At the time, Simmons was set to play was set to play Commissioner Gordon in Justice League and many thought he was getting hench for the upcoming film.

However, the Whiplash actor revealed that it was 'all coincidental'.

He said in an interview with Business Insider: "After the second and final time that I got hugely fat in my life and when I lost that weight six or seven years ago, I pretty much decided that I was going to stay in decent shape for the rest of my life."

At the time, his PT captioned the pic as: "'Making the young generation jealous. This is what dedication looks like...His intensity in the gym is through the roof.

"It's been a privilege helping him stay on point. I've got a lot of respect for this man."

In all honesty, I think it's hard not to take your hat off to the man.

As reported by Insider, Simmons revealed: "I was not in good shape at all.

"I was overweight and soft and here I am playing the head of the Aryan Brotherhood in this maximum-security prison in the first-ever HBO original drama and I was watching the first season when it came out and I just thought, 'Wow, I don't believe this guy at all.

"I have to get my a** to the gym and be a believable hard-a**.'"

The actor got up to 250 pounds in 2009, and wanted to get in better shape.

He added: "I've gone back and forth with fine-tuning the kind of conditioning I'm doing.

"Sometimes trying to shed weight and getting leaner and sometimes trying to pack on a little more muscle."

Fair play mate - it makes my 2,000 steps a day look even worse than it actually is.
