Austrian Town Called F**king Is Finally Changing Its Name

After years of being the butt of jokes and having signs stolen, F**king is getting a rebrand.

There are towns, cities, landmarks and all sorts of locations that have unfortunate names.

Whether they mean something in a different language or it belongs to a unfortunately named family dynasty, there's usually not much townsfolk can do about it.

However, one tiny town in Austria has had enough with being the butt of everyone's joke so they've decided to make a change.

Mayor Andrea Holzner has revealed to Austrian broadcaster Oe24 that F**king will be renamed to Fugging from January 1, 2021.

"I can confirm that the village is being renamed. I really don't want to say anything more - we've had enough media frenzy about this in the past," she said.

The town, which only has a population of around 100 people, has had its namesake for nearly 1,000 years.

It managed to avoid ridicule for hundreds of years until the internet came around and people looking for dirty words in the most random places managed to make the town fo F**king go viral.

Ever since, they have countlessly been featured on lists and articles about the rudest town or city names. The word F**king has no deeper meaning in German.

An article from 2012 claims locals were getting fed up with naked couples travelling to the tiny town in Upper Austria near the border with Germany and having sex in front of the sign. Some locals tried to capitalise on the situation and started chucking the name on everything from postcards to beer.

There has been a divided reaction to the new name, with some people believing they should just keep it the sake of fun. An OOeN reader asked: "Don't people have any sense of humour these days?"

Another added: "They're getting free publicity - they ought to have been happy to have a funny name."

There's no word on whether the nearby hamlets of Oberf**king and Unterf**king will get a similar facelift.

But if you're the type to want a photo with a funny sounding town name then you only have a few weeks until all the signs are changed to Fugging - which apparently is more how locals pronounce the town's name anyway.

Not that we're encouraging anyone to travel unnecessarily during a pandemic. Just know that F**king's days are numbered.
