When they're not saving our lives, dogs are finding other ways to make us love them unconditionally.

In the case of Bruce the golden retriever, that's amassing a very impressive stick collection and being obsessed with showing it off.

Bruce, who is the very best boy, is unable to play with sticks after a freak accident put him in hospital two years ago.

But, like those of us who are unable to drink tequila anymore after over-imbibing once or twice, he still loves being around them.

His dad Leo Icenhour told The Dodo that despite the fact Bruce is only allowed to play with rubber toys now, he's still collected a very impressive collection that he's incredibly proud of.

"Despite his injury, his love for sticks was not tarnished, but instead it has only grown into a beautiful collection," Icenhour said.

"He prides himself in collecting sticks of all shapes and sizes from our backyard and plants them right in front of our front door, checking on them daily when we go in and out of the house.

Leo said Bruce's obsession with collecting sticks came when he lost his favourite one in snow.

"The next day, Bruce was in an utter panic because he obviously couldn't find his stick or even see the ground."

I am just imagining poor Brucey running around the snow-covered yard trying to find his precious stick and it's equally heartbreaking and hilarious.

Bruce spent the afternoon searching the yard for his fave stick.

After hours spent digging holes and trying to locate the prized possession, the weather warmed up and he was able to spot it

"After the snow partially melted, he was able to finally dig around and find his stick," Icenhour said. "I've never seen him more triumphant than that moment."

"I believe he started the collection because he never wants to feel the panic of being stick-less again," he added.

This is the same argument I use when I bring home another pack of Cheetos, despite there already being five packets in the house.

Bruce now collects sticks and leaves them on the porch because he knows he isn't allowed to bring them in the house.

"He just likes to add to his collection and is very proud of it," Icenhour said.

What a perfect angel.
