NSW Premier Facing Calls To 'Step Aside' If Covid-19 Cases Continue To Climb

“If Gladys Berejiklian isn’t up to the job, then she needs to step aside because she’s stuffed this.”

The New South Wales Premier is being criticised left, right and centre as coronavirus cases continue to climb in the state.

There was a record 681 new infections announced yesterday (August 19) and the daily case numbers jumped from the 400s to 600s in just one day earlier this week.

It's a worrying trend considering Greater Sydney has been in lockdown for weeks and the situation has only become more dire.

It's led to many calls for Gladys Berejiklian to step down as Premier.

The Project host Lisa Wilkinson has slammed the state leader for her handling of this outbreak and believes it's time for a fresh face.

"I think I speak on behalf of just about everybody that is watching these press conferences at 11am every day...they are almost unwatchable," Lisa Wilkinson said last night.

"The whole situation is completely farcical. On a day when NSW is recording its highest numbers of the pandemic, another family is grieving a loved one, Gladys Berejiklian makes no new restrictions.

"She's doing nothing, the soft lockdown continues, and we're all scratching our heads trying to work out if she's not going to do anything more - why is she continuing with this same rhetoric?

"If Gladys Berejiklian isn't up to the job, then she needs to step aside because she's stuffed this."

The Premier has promised there is a 'light at the end of the tunnel' and the state government has been drafting up a 'Freedom Plan' for people who are double vaccinated.

According to The Australian, people who have received both jabs will be able to hit up restaurants, pubs and gyms in a matter of weeks.

There could also be changes to the singles bubble as well in this Freedom Plan, however the finer details are yet to be worked out.

Sadly, the rumoured deal won't apply to the 12 local government areas of concern just yet.

Ms Berejiklian conceded that the state will probably never get back to zero cases because the Delta variant is so strong.

She said: "I appreciate what we are going through looks difficult but every state in Australia will need to come to terms with the fact that when you get to a certain level of vaccination and open up, Delta will creep in.

"We can't pretend that we will have zero cases around Australia with Delta.

"As the Doherty (Institute) report says, once you get to 80 per cent double dose and you have to open up, everyone will have to learn to live with Delta."
