Melbourne Restaurant Offering Free Meals To Bloke Fined For Breaking Lockdown To Buy Butter Chicken

They hope the free curries will 'soften the blow' of the $1,652 fine.

People were shocked and amused when they discovered some of the reasons why people had broken lockdown in Melbourne during a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

But one situation seemed to really stand out: a bloke was fined $1,652 for driving 32 kilometres from Werribee to buy a butter chicken from an Indian restaurant in the inner city.

As per the rules, if you're in the lockdown zone, you're only allowed to shop, exercise and carry out essential tasks within your local area. So it's no surprise that the bloke was fined for driving a little too far for a good curry.

However, that restaurant is now on the hunt to find this man with the insatiable craving.

Tonka Melbourne has posted onto social media asking if anyone is able to point them in the direction of the man who was willing to risk life and limb for a classic butter chicken.

It wrote on Instagram: "Guys, help! We need to find Mr Butter Chicken...Anyone got a lead? And if so, how would we know he was the real deal?

"We want to deliver him a few curries to soften the blow. All we know is that he lives in Werribee, he got fined $1,652.00 and had called earlier to ask about delivery to Werribee which we couldn't do until Wednesday. But how good is Butter Chicken?"

In a separate post the Melbourne restaurant added: "$1,652.00 works out to be 61 Butter Chickens, which equals free butter chicken for life.

"We absolutely do not condone any illegal activity, especially related to COVID but f*** this gave us [a] well needed laugh."

It's unclear if they want to gift the unnamed man 61 butter chickens, free butter chicken for life or just a couple of meals. Either way, it will be a nice reprieve from having to cough up that much dough for getting a takeaway.

The butter chicken loving rule breaker was one of 74 people who were issued fines in a 24 hour period over the weekend. Victoria Police say they performed a whopping 13,486 vehicle checks, which saw them hand out 10 infringements to drivers not following directions.

While there have been dozens who have done the wrong thing, the Premier says thankfully the majority of people are heeding the warnings.

Daniel Andrews says police aren't mucking around during this second round of lockdowns: "The vast majority of people are doing the right thing and I am so, so grateful to them and they want to give all of them the praise that they have earned.

"They are absolutely doing a fantastic job. They know it's frustrating, and it is difficult."

From tomorrow (Thursday July 22) it will be mandatory for people to wear face masks in locked down parts of the state.
