Multiple people have been gunned down in a mass shooting in Colorado.

Authorities have one person in custody and an investigation is underway into how the shooter was able to massacre people inside and outside the King Soopers grocery store.

Officials have revealed 10 people, including a police officer, have been been killed and many more have been injured.

Social media has been awash with witness accounts of the terrifying incident as well as commentary on yet another mass shooting in the United States.

However the National Rifle Association has come under fire for a poorly timed post on Twitter that defended the Second Amendment.

Twitter

The pro-gun lobby wrote out part of the article in the US Constitution that states: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

The tweet was posted several hours after the mass shooting erupted and people have called the NRA tone deaf for trying to defend weapons when a gun was again used to inflict needless violence.

One person responding to the tweet said: "Cool of you guys to take time out from personally enriching yourselves to post this twaddle. Now, in your own words, define 'well regulated militia.' I'm betting it's not some murderous moron in a grocery store."

Another added: "People are DEAD in Boulder because of guns. Their bodies aren't even cold yet. And *this* is what you tweet out? Literally saying nothing at all would have been better."

A third wrote: 'We do not need a 'well regulated militia'. It's the 21st century. Enough with prioritizing some words written centuries ago over common sense and the safety of Americans and our freedom to live a life without fear of being murdered when we go out in public."

Images from the crime scene show people running for their lives, hoping they won't become another statistic in America's ongoing gun crime.

Witnesses described the gunman as dressed in tactical gear who moved methodically through the car park popping off several rounds of ammunition.

Further gunshots were heard coming from inside the grocery sore.

Authorities were seen leading a shirtless man out of the store in handcuffs. He had what appeared to be blood covering his limbs.

A senior law enforcement source told CNN the weapon used in the shooting was an AR-15-style rifle.
