Timothée Chalamet has shared the first photo of him dressed as Willy Wonka for his upcoming movie diving into the origins of the iconic Roald Dahl character.

The American actor is unmistakable as the leader of the chocolate factory as he wears his legendary top hat and red velvet jacket.

The image was shared by Chalamet on social media and people have gone understandably nuts over the preview.

One person wrote: "I am very proud of everything you do."

Another added: "So far your Wonka is the closest to how I remember Wonka from the book sketches!"

According to Deadline, the film will incorporate musical numbers, meaning we'll get to see Timothée singing and dancing.

The move is set to focus on a young Willy Wonka and his life before opening his magical factory.

Paddington director Paul King will be leading the project and the screenplay will be written by comedian Simon Farnaby.

King has been involved in bringing this movie to life as early as 2018, so it's been in the works for a while. The big piece to the puzzle has been finding their young Willy Wonka and Timothée will no doubt do an amazing job.

But don't hold your breath for the film as it's not expected to land on the big screen until March 2023.

Willy Wonka was first imagined in Roald Dahl's 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and later portrayed by Gene Wilder in the 1971 film adaption: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

The movie was then adapted again by Tim Burton in 2005 (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), and we saw Johnny Depp step into Wonka's role.

Depp was praised for bringing a cooky and bizarre reimagining of the Wonka character and upping the ante from Wilder's performance.

Sadly though for everyone, there aren't any plot details on what Wonka will dive into.

In Depp's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we got to see a tiny insight into the man who would end up being a confectionary king.

Wonka's father is shown as a dentist who hates chocolate and sweets; shouting at his young son: "Candy is a waste of time! No son of mine is going to be a chocolatier!"

We'll have to wait and see whether that forms part of Wonka's storyline or if they go in a completely different direction.
