Lewis Hamilton mocked for turning up to Belgian Grand Prix wearing a ‘tea cosy’

The British racer's choice of clothing didn't go down too well with some fans

Lewis Hamilton is known for having a keen eye for fashion, but his latest choice saw him come in for some criticism.

The seven-time champion was set to compete at the Belgian Grand Prix yesterday (28 August) when he turned up in a, let's say, interesting outfit.

He arrived at the circuit wearing a purple cardigan and trousers, as well as a delightful pink knitted balaclava, complete with some sunflowers.

And people watching back at home couldn't help but notice the striking resemblance the nifty piece of headwear had to a tea cosy.

Sharing a photo of the 37-year-old to Twitter, one style critic said: "I present you Lewis Hamilton. Lost for words."

Another commented: "Hope his nan isn’t missing her tea cosy."

"I'm glad my nan took my advice to wrap up warm now her bills are high," quipped a third.

While another added: "Ah, I did wonder where my grandmother's tea cosy went."

Things didn't get any better for Hamilton when he actually made it onto the track either.

The Mercedes driver has had a difficult season so far, with rival Max Verstappen leading the way at the top of the drivers' league while he languishes in sixth position.

And Hamilton got off to the worst possible start in Belgium, pulling out of the race on the very first lap following a collision with Fernando Alonso.

The crash was deemed to be a racing incident but Alonso took issue with Hamilton's behaviour.

The Spaniard said: "What an idiot closing the door from the outside.

"We had a mega start but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first. Why does he close the door? I just don’t understand."

Following the crash, Hamilton apologised, admitting that he was at fault.

He said: "Looking back at the footage he was in my blind spot, I didn’t give him enough space. It is my fault.

"Just so sorry to the team. I could not see him. I am sorry to the team and I need to recuperate and get back on the treadmill."

However, the British racer was clearly surprised by his fellow competitor's comments.

Asked if he'd spoken to him, Hamilton said: "No. I would have until I heard what he said. I know that’s how things feel in the heat of the moment, but it’s nice to know how he feels about me."

Hamilton said he was just happy to have made it out in one piece.

"I remember looking at the ground, it was definitely high up. I’m grateful to be still alive and in shape," he said.
