Lionel Messi has secured yet another record by claiming the most-liked Instagram post in history.
That’s right, that egg has finally been overtaken.
The Argentinian secured his maiden World Cup trophy at 35 years of age with a victory over France in the final in Qatar.
It was a momentous moment in sporting history, with Messi securing his status as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
The South American nation claimed a 4-2 penalty shootout victory after the game finished 3-3 after 120 minutes, with Messi claiming two goals.
In the aftermath of the thrilling victory, the little magician took to Instagram to post 10 pictures of his celebrations in Qatar.
You could tell just how much the victory meant to him.
His caption read: “CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!
“So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still didn’t fall, I can't believe it......
“Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We proved once again that when Argentinians fight together and are united we are able to achieve our aims.
“The merit belongs to this group, which is above individualities, it is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also one of all Argentinians.
“We did it!!! LET'S GO ARGENTINA DAMN!!!!! We’ll see each other very soon.”
The post hit 55.9 million likes on the platform in just over 24 hours, surpassing the previous record set by an image of an egg.
The image was posted in January 2019, and had set out to overtake the record at the time of 18 million likes, previously held by Kylie Jenner.
Messi seems like a pretty worthy successor.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner had already taken the mantle as the most liked Instagram post from a sportsperson by overtaking his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
Prior to the FIFA World Cup, the Portuguese star had posted an advert from Louis Vuitton that featured both himself and Messi playing chess.
That post has since accumulated over 42 million likes, however, Messi’s record-breaking carousel overtook that mark in less than a day after being posted.
However, Ronaldo is still the most-followed person on Instagram with a staggering 519 million followers, compared to Messi’s 401 million.Featured Image Credit: Aflo Co. Ltd. / Alamy. Abaca Press / Alamy.
