Lionel Messi has explained why he burst into tears following his first goal in the 2026 World Cup.
Doubt had been cast over ageing World Cup holders Argentina ahead of the tournament, with three of the last four world champions being knocked out of the following competition in the group stages.
One simulation did predict Argentina to win the World Cup before the tournament began, though, and it might be onto something after Lionel Scaloni's side's opening performance.
Lionel Messi, who turns 39 next week and now plays in the MLS with Inter Miami, inspired his side to a 3-0 victory over Algeria with his first-ever World Cup hat-trick.

It took just 17 minutes for Messi to get his opener with a rasping drive from 30 yards out, as the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner became the first footballer to play in six World Cups - which Cristiano Ronaldo is set to achieve for Portugal on Thursday, too.
However, he was overcome by emotion after the strike, with cameras spotting the Argentina captain wiping his eyes clear of tears with his shirt.

Messi shook off the tears and went onto score two more as Argentina cruised to victory, but after the game he revealed that his crying was not about football.
Why Messi cried during World Cup victory
Messi was asked about his reaction to the goal after the match, with The Sun reporting: “I cried after the first goal, yes.
"But it was something completely unrelated to football.
“I went through some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength."
All-time top World Cup goalscorers
Messi's hat-trick has now seen him equal the long-standing record set by Germany's Miroslav Klose as the World Cup's all-time leading goalscorer with 16.
If he continues his blistering start in upcoming group games against Austria and newcomers Jordan, he is sure to claim the record as his own.
However, he's is in close competition to keep the record with Kylian Mbappe.
The Real Madrid superstar scored twice in France's opening 3-0 victory against Senegal and is now on 14 World Cup goals a the age of 27.
Both could break the record this summer.
The World Cup's leading goal scorers:
- Miroslav Klose (Germany) and Lionel Messi (Argentina) - 16
- Ronaldo (Brazil) - 15
- Gerd Muller (Germany) and Kylian Mbappe (France) - 14
- Just Fontaine (France) - 13
- Pelé (Brazil) - 12
