People are shocked by the lyrics to Macarena

Another childhood memory ruined

Another day, another childhood classic ruined by the internet.

If you're of a certain age, you will remember the sweaty school discos, with the boys dancing on one side of the room and the girls on the other as tunes from 90s legends like the Spice Girls, Boyzone, and S Club 7 blast through the tinny speakers.

One song that epitomised those halcyon days, though, was, of course, the Los Del Rio classic 'Macarena'.

The 1993 tune has stood the test of time and remains a favourite for weddings, with p***ed up uncles and aunts desperately trying to keep up with the muy rapido chorus. Good times.

But have you ever actually looked up the lyrics to the dance floor classic? Like, have you ever Googled them?

Ever actually looked up the lyrics to the Macarena? Me neither.

Well, some people now have, and they are pretty shocked at how racy the tune is, which, it turns out, is about a young girl who goes out on the town while her boyfriend's away and tries to get off with his mates.

Yes, really.

But don't take our word for it, here are the verses: "When I dance, they call me Macarena / And the boys, they say que soy buena / They all want me.

"They can't have me / So they all come and dance beside me / Move with me / Chant with me / And if you're good, I'll take you home with me.

"But don't you worry about my boyfriend / He's a boy whose name is Vitorino / I don't want him / Couldn't stand him / He was no good so I (hahahaha) / Now, come on, what was I supposed to do? / He was out of town and his two friends were so fine.

Have a listen for yourself:

"Come and find me, my name is Macarena / Always at the party con las chicas que son buenas / Come join me / Dance with me / And all you fellows chant along with me."

While most of us have never really thought about the lyrics, some who have sought them out in the past took to social media to share their surprise.

Writing on Twitter, one user said: "I've never really paid attention to the lyrics to Macarena. Shocked that it was played in primary school over and over again."

Another commented: "Can't believe schools would have us dance to the Macarena especially considering the lyrics as kids."

Discussing the song on Reddit, a third put: "Ever paid attention to the lyrics of The Macarena?

"Remember hearing it at about 28 and for some reason actually listening to it properly and the being like 'huh, how did I never pick that up before?"

While another added: "I think most people here in the UK would be surprised if they stopped to actually listen to it. It's a song we play at children's school discos, weddings etc, but none of us ever actually listen to properly."
