Man With Severe Deformity Gets New Nose After Chance Meeting With Surgeon

A man who was living with what has been described as a 'penis on his nose' has had it removed thanks to a chance meeting with a surgeon.

Conrado Estrada, from New York, developed a condition called rhinophyma which had left him with thick and dimpled skin at the tip of his nose.

He had been trying to find a solution for years before he bumped into Dr Thomas Romo who works as the director of facial plastic reconstructive surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

As well as the appearance of his nose causing issues, Mr Estrada also struggled with breathing problems, speaking, eating and his smile couldn't be seen.

Mr Estrada, who works as a painter and construction labourer, turned up to Dr Romo's home with a paint crew around five months ago which was when they first met.

Speaking to the New York Post, Dr Romo explained: "This was a bad one," before going on to compare it to 'a penis on his nose', adding: "It was a smoldering infection... and it would have just kept going.”

After seeing the problem, he pulled the worker to one side to speak to him as he said: "I don't mind telling people what I think."

Mr Estrada, who was told the only solution would be surgery, revealed how he feels about Dr Romo, telling the publication: "I believe God sent an angel to take care of me - and that's how I see Dr Romo."

Talking about how other people reacted when they saw him, Mr Estrada said: "They would stare at me. Children would ask their mothers what happened to me - and I would get around it by using a face mask all the time.”

He went on to add: "I had spent six years seeing doctors and skin specialists and nothing would get better."

Remembering his meeting with Romo, Mr Estrada explained: "He saw me, and he gave me a hug. He said, ‘I’m going to help you'."

Some days after they met, and a few forms signed, Mr Estrada was on the operating table having the surgery.

It's now been four weeks since the operation and Dr Romo said: "You’d think he won an Olympic gold medal," referring to his pictures, he added: "[His] chest is out, face’s out, he’s a smiley guy. I feel great for him!”
