An aircraft has crashed into a supermarket car park in Portugal.

The plane is thought to have been carrying four people, with witnesses saying it exploded in mid-air.

It came down near the Lidl Supermarket in Tires, near the coastal town of Cascais, which is 20 miles west of Lisbon.

Local reports say there are casualties, however it is yet to be officially confirmed how many people are dead or injured. Unofficial reports say the victims who died on board the plane are a pilot and three passengers.

One woman tweeted: "A plane just fell all around us.

"I saw the plane going down!!

"After they called the Fire Department and I think it fell more or less on top of the Lidl."
