Burma's army has revealed that a military plane has disappeared with 116 people on board.

A spokesperson for the chief of the country's army spoke to AFP regarding the aircraft that reportedly went missing on Wednesday between the southern town of Myeik and Yangon, Burma's largest city.

In a statement, they said: "Communication was lost suddenly at about 1.35pm (8.05 BST) when it reached about 20 miles west of Dawei town."

The plane was declared missing after air traffic control lost contact, with 11 crew members and 105 passengers - believed to be family members of military personnel - on board.

A source, who asked not to be named, told AFP: "We think it was a technical failure. Weather is fine there."

Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the Andaman Sea.
