Café Bombarded With Negative Reviews After Woman Claims Owner Threw Drink At Her

The video footage tells a different story

A café in California has been bombarded with bad reviews after a woman claimed the owner's husband threw a drink over her and her child, despite the fact that video footage from the shop seems to tell a completely different story.

The woman claims Tony Ly, husband of Café Tapioca owner Michelle Thuy, threw a drink over her and made racist remarks whilst she sat in the Boba tea shop

Thuy now claims that she has been bombed with reviews and angry phone calls from people accusing her of being racist.

However, the CCTV footage from the café appears to show that no such incident took place.

According to Thuy, the woman started kicking off after an argument over a strawberry slushy she'd ordered.

The woman wasn't happy with her order.

She admitted her husband got the order wrong, but said the woman then shared a post online claiming she'd been the victim of racial abuse and had been attacked.

Thuy said: "My husband made a mistake because he doesn't understand the difference between a slushy and a milkshake and he put milk for her.

"We tried to fix it for her but she kind of had an attitude."

When sharing the screenshots, the woman wrote: "Never in a million years did i think i would have a drink thrown at me with my child in my arms by the OWNER of this place."

She continued: "I'm sharing because i don't know if anyone has had a bad experience here and don't want you to."

However, surveillance footage released after that post tells quite a different story.

The cafe in Dublin, California.

In the video, the woman can be seen speaking with Ly, who stands behind the counter, and she hasn't got a child in her arms, nor can any such child be seen nearby.

Obviously, it's possible the full story isn't told through either the screenshots or the CCTV footage, but it doesn't look like any drink is thrown at any point.

There's also no audio, so we can't tell what was said.

In another video shared after the fact, the woman can be seen to be handed a drink, and then points to the menu - probably because the order was incorrect - before dropping her cash and walking out of the shop.

Then, she comes back and an argument appears to take place, but after that Ly can be seen throwing the drink into the rubbish bin, rather than at the customer.

Thuy also denies using racist language.

She told Daily Dot: "We did not talk about racism that she put on social media. Tony did not say any word about Black or Asian, no nothing.

"We have a business we open for everyone, we're not like that."

Thuy claims she's since been inundated with abuse because of the allegations.

She added: "A lot of people call my store and yelled to me 'why you guys doing that'? It really really affected my business.

"The incident that put on social media has affected my business very much."

She claims they've also had 30 negative reviews on Yelp in 24 hours.

The cafe has been inundated with negative reviews and allegations of racism.

One states: "Very rude owner! He threw a drink on a customer because he refused to make her the correct drink. She asked for a refund and he threw her drink at her. Please think twice before visiting this place."

Thuy claims the customer was offered a refund.

A GoFundMe has been started for the owners of the shop, and happy customers have been trying to balance things by adding their positive experiences of the place.

While Thuy said 'a lot of people called saying we are doing bad,' she is grateful for the positive messages and said they have made things more bearable.

LADbible has reached out to the woman in the footage, as well as Café Tapioca, for comment.
