It has landed safely, thankfully.

A passenger jet had to be intercepted by fighter jets over Europe earlier today after pilots were alerted to a potential bomb threat.

Flying from JFK airport in New York to Tel Aviv in Israel, the El Al Boeing 747-400 had to be intercepted by two Swiss fighter jets as the plane entered the country's airspace.
The threats were made anonymously and no one is yet sure of the nature of the threats.

Local reports claim two supersonic booms could be heard around 8.30am, when the F-18 fighter jets were scrambled to escort the plane.

They took off from Switzerland's Payerne air base in what has been described as a 'hot mission'.

According to Vladi Barrosa, a spokesperson for Swiss government-run air navigation service Skyguide, the French military also had to escort the flight prior to its entry into Swiss airspace.

El Al has not commented on the threat, its credibility or why the airline chose not to perform an emergency landing.

The flight eventually landed in Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport at around 12.37pm local time.
