A man in Kent has been arrested after allegedly firing several imitation guns into the air on the balcony of his dockside apartment.

Police arrived at a block of flats near Dockside Outlet Shopping Centre in Chatham, following reports of a man opening fire.

A man in his 30s has been arrested and police remain at the scene, Kent Online reports.

Clips shared online show the man shooting into the air, while a livestream showed the alleged gunman opening fire.

The suspect also shared clips on his social media, in one he showed off a number of guns, which police have since said they believe to be replicas; in a second clip he steps outside onto his balcony and shoots into the air. His Instagram account has since been removed or deactivated.

A spokesperson for Kent Police said: "Kent Police was called at 8.35am on Wednesday 22 April 2020 to a disturbance at a flat on Dock Head Road, Chatham.

"Members of the public reported seeing a man on a balcony with weapons and patrols, including armed officers, attended the scene.

"The police helicopter was also deployed and a man in 30s has now been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences.

"Patrols remain at the scene where officers have located four suspected imitation firearms as part of their enquiries."

Speaking to Kent Online, one local resident said: "There was a lot of banging just over an hour ago, I just assumed it was construction workers.

Footage filmed by a witness showed the gunman on the balcony.

"There were armed police outside The Range who waved everyone back, they moved towards the noise.

"Staff at The Range have been trying to catch everyone and get them into the shop.

"Someone across the way shouted about someone having a gun. There's a police helicopter flying above."

On social media, one man who claimed to live in the same apartment block, wrote:"The guy is on top of the penthouse with a machine gun, and a rifle and a pistol.

"He's shooting at the police. I think he doesn't want anyone else, he wants the police.

"There is a helicopter now with eyes on him, and the police have got him as well. It's crazy.

"I think they are going to move in. The police are moving in. They are going in. He's shooting.

"The police are coming out of the trees."
