Man Shot Dead By French Police After Killing Teacher In Paris Suburb

A man has been shot dead by French police after killing a middle school teacher by slitting his throat in the street of a suburb of Paris, Reuters reports.

According to media, the victim was a teacher who had shown caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in a classroom.

The suspect was spotted by police patrol while carrying a knife a short distance from the scene of the attack, which took place in Conflans Sainte-Honorine, a suburb north-west of Paris.

Le Parisien newspaper said the victim was 'horribly mutilated', while various other media reports say the teacher was decapitated.

A police spokesman confirmed officers shot the suspect dead.

Earlier today, police told members of the public to avoid the area.

France's anti-terror prosecutor said it was investigating the attack, while Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin - who had been travelling to Morocco - confirmed he is returning urgently to Paris.
