Actor Max von Sydow has died aged 90, his wife has confirmed.

The actor - best known for his roles in Flash Gordon, Star Wars: Force Awakens, Game of Thrones and The Exorcist - passed away at his home in France over the weekend.

Speaking to Paris Match magazine, Catherine von Sydow said: "It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow on March 8, 2020."

Born Carl von Sydow, in Lund, Sweden, in 1929, the veteran actor made his name in a series of iconic films of the 20th century, working alongside Ingmar Bergman in The Seventh Seal (1957) and then starring as Jesus Christ in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965).

He continued acting well into his 70s and 80s, starring in The Simpsons and then later as the Three-Eyed Raven in Game of Thrones and Lor San Tekka, who appeared in the opening scenes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Since news of his death was announced, fans and stars in the world of entertainment have taken to social media to pay their respects.

Writing on Twitter, one person said: "RIP Max Von Sydow. I was starting to think he would live forever, but he certainly has achieved screen immortality. An absolute king of cinema, from THE SEVENTH SEAL to STRANGE BREW, what a legend."

A second wrote: "RIP #MaxvonSydow a brilliant, brilliant actor and a true Hollywood legend. We have lost one of the true greats."


A third said: "R.I.P. #MaxVonSydow - a genre spanning true Titan of an Actor! Always mesmerising, a treat whenever he showed up."

While another added: "Max von Sydow was possibly the most understated actors there is. He's one of the all time greats, from his collaborations with Bergman in The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries to Scorsese and Allen works with Shutter Island and Hannah and Her Sisters. Sad loss of a brill actor."
