The daughter of Olympic sprinter Tyson Gay has been tragically shot dead at a Kentucky restaurant.

Like her father, Trinity Gay was also a budding track star, but news is emerging that she was fatally shot in the neck at the Cook Out restaurant in Lexington early Sunday morning.

The 15-year-old was subsequently rushed to hospital though the doctors were unable to prevent the death, according to officials.

WKYT report Lexington Police were called to a shooting at the restaurant just before 4am. As well as reporting two cars were exchanged in a shooting before driving away.

The sprinter told Lex18: "She didn't make it. I'm so confused. She was just here last week for fall break. It's so crazy. I have no idea what happened."

Gunfire was said to have been exchanged between two vehicles, described as a gray Dodge Charger and a dark coloured sports car. Two persons of interest are being questioned, according to reports.

Trinity, said to have been a bystander as the shots were fired, competed in the 100m and 200m sprint races just like her father.

She tragically passed away shortly before 5am this morning.
