Pensioner insists he'd rather go to jail than pay £100 parking fine

Pensioner insists he'd rather go to jail than pay £100 parking fine

The 75-year-old man said he'd rather go to prison 'on a matter of principle'

A 75-year-old man has said he'd rather go to jail than pay a £100 parking fine he was hit with after he went to Hull for a hospital appointment.

Jamie Jamieson visited Hull Royal Infirmary on 6 April for a scan to find out if he had Parkinson's disease, but said he couldn't find a parking spot close to the entrance of the hospital.

The pensioner then drove to the nearby Fountain Street Car Park, where he says he paid £4 for two hours of parking with one of the ticket machines in the car park.

All seemed well until several weeks later, on 25 April, he was hit with a £100 parking fine.

While the notice said that fine would be reduced to £60 if he paid within 14 days, the Scarborough resident refuses to pay.

The 75-year-old also no longer has the ticket which would prove that he did pay for his parking, and he said he would rather 'go to jail on a matter of principle' as he is 'adamant' that he won't be paying.

Jamieson now wants to warn others that they might fall foul of the same problem he's having.

He said: "I would honestly go to jail on a matter of principle because I won’t be paying this full stop and I’m very adamant.

"I’ve done 25 years in the Royal Navy, 25 years in GCHQ, I’m not going to pay a £100 fine for the sake of it. It’s absolutely crazy.

"At first I thought it was a scam and I think it’s appalling. Other people should be warned and I think it should be challenged in general."

He went on to say that the experience 'made me feel like I've been scammed' and wondered 'who is going to keep a ticket for three weeks', and that he believes CCTV of the car park will show he did pay for a ticket.

The letter he received telling him he was being fined was also dated 17 April, whereas Jamieson says he only received it on 25 April.

He said he found this 'strange' and contacted the car park through email on 26 April, but hasn't received a reply as of yet.

Others have claimed they'd received fines from the car park after paying legitimately.

He said that other drivers using the car park have had similar poor experiences.

And, looking through the reviews people have left for the place, there are not a lot of positive experiences.

Someone claimed on Google Reviews that they'd received a parking fine letter several days after it had supposedly been sent, slashing the 14 day period where they could spend £60 rather than £100 and 'would avoid at all costs'.

While another alleges they'd been hit with a fine when they'd paid the money and even after providing proof that they legitimately bought a ticket, they were apparently asked to pay £15 for admin fees.
