Sam Fender has apologised for taking a selfie with Johnny Depp on the day of his trial verdict, saying 'I didn't think it through'.

On the day of his win in court, Depp was still in the UK and was on the sesh in a Newcastle pub, which wasn't long after he appeared on stage alongside guitarist Jeff Beck.

Fender shared a photo on Instagram to reveal he was with both Depp and Beck in a beer garden, with the caption: "Some serious heroes."

However, Fender has now apologised for taking a selfie with the actor.

“I want to apologise,” he wrote on his Instagram Story today (June 4).

“I was invited to briefly meet a musical legend and an actor who has been in almost every film I’ve watched growing up. I went – we chatted music and without thinking I took a photo and posted it as it was pretty surreal.

“I now realise that it was a poor choice of words and timing, but that’s irrelevant.

“It was naive and disrespectful to those who relate to any of the issues highlighted in the trial and the broader issues it poses. I didn’t think it through and I should have.”

He continued: “I can’t really say anything other than it was ill-judged and I was ignorant with regards to the trials as a whole, and thoughtless on what my post could imply. I realise this entirely, and for that I’m deeply sorry.”

In what was one of the most talked about court cases in recent times, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor proved that the 2018 article written by his ex-wife, Amber Heard, was defamatory and, in return, was awarded $15 million (£12 million) by the jury, later capped at $10.35 million (£8 million) by Judge Penny Azcarate.

In a separate verdict, Heard was awarded $2 million (£1.6 million) in damages in a counterclaim against her ex over defamatory comments made by his lawyer Adam Waldman, who referred to her abuse claims as a 'hoax'.

It all began when Heard posted an online article in the Washington Post titled: “I spoke up against sexual violence – and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.”

Although the piece didn't mention Depp by name, his lawyers claim that it falsely implied he physically and sexually abused Heard while they were together.
