A woman who became used a sperm donor at 43 found out more than she bargained for after joining a Facebook group.

Jess Nuremberg, who is now 44, wanted to be a mum – even if it was on her own.

Instead of waiting for someone to get into a relationship with, she instead took the step to enlist the help of a sperm donor who she had shared common interests with.

Then, after six rounds of IVF, she welcomed her daughter, Kaia, in May 2024.

The mum from Los Angeles, US, said: "When I heard her heartbeat for the first time, that was when I realised I’m going to be a mum, and I’m doing it all alone.

“I felt fear, happiness, joy, the highs and the lows came in that moment.”

However, she was shocked to learn more about the man who donated his sperm to her after another mum showed her a Facebook community group, made up of other people who had used his services too.

Instead of being an only child, Kaia was revealed to be just one of 47 other children who now all share a biological father.

But instead of shunning them, Nuremberg calls them her ‘extended family’.

She’s even planning to meet some of them for a Disneyland trip in March.

The mum said: "My daughter has 47 siblings, all under four years old. She may not have siblings in the home, but she has a community of half siblings.”

Explaining that the initial reaction to the group was ‘overwhelming at first’, but ‘once I met the other mums, I began to form real connections’.

She said of her daughter: "I hope Kaia forms long lasting relationships with her siblings and that a true extended family grows out of them. The group has made me feel far less alone, what could have been an isolating journey is now shared with so many others."

The mother revealed that she had come out of a long-term relationship when she decided to freeze some of her eggs at 33, and by 40, she was set on her plan to use a donor and IVF to make her parenting dreams come true.

But it wasn’t an easy ride, as her waters broke early and she had to give birth alone.

She purchased some donor sperm - choosing a donor who aligned with her values – but when none of her eggs made it to embryos, she went on to opt for IVF treatment.

After six rounds, she ended up with three healthy embryos, and after some challenges, managed to implant an embryo and carry her daughter until her waters unexpectedly broke.

“Giving birth alone was one of the most magical moments, because I realised I’m empowered to do all of this by myself,” she revealed.

Because she’s alone, Nuremberg explained she had to hire a nanny to help, revealing: “She’s like a second mum, helping me to raise her.”

Now, she’s not so alone with the discovery of her daughter’s half siblings.

She said: “A group of us are all getting together in March to go to Disneyland.”

“I see myself as no different to a widowed woman," she added.
