Sommelier Fired From Salt Bae's Restaurant For ‘Eating An Avocado After 5.30pm'

A former employee of Salt Bae's Knightsbridge restaurant claims he was fired for eating an avocado in the canteen

An ex-wine steward from Salt Bae's Knightsbridge restaurant has claimed he was fired after 'eating an avocado past 5:30 pm' in the canteen.

Salt Bae, or Nusret Gökçe, the Turkish chef, restaurateur and social media personality owns the the luxury steak house chain Nusr-Et, and has since opened a restaurant in London alongside numerous sites worldwide.

The restaurant chain has been notorious for making headlines in the last year over it's eye-watering prices and the negative attention it has attracted for it's 'overpriced' menu.

But now, the London branch has come back into the public eye following an interview with the restaurant's former sommelier, Guillermo Perez, who has dubbed the luxury chain eatery as 'McDonald's for rich people'.

Among these claims, Perez has alleged that guests have even been served 'frozen chips and Heinz ketchup' branding the restaurant as 'immoral' for such a high costing menu.

"One day I saw a big bag of frozen chips and I thought 'really? That's what we are serving people?' And they had Heinz ketchup and mayonnaise, which you can get from the shop," Perez alleged in an interview with the Daily Mail.

With a burger alone amounting to £100 alongside the more high end specials including the Golden Giant Tomahawk steak for £1,450 and Golden Giant Striplion for £1,350 - Perez has claimed that the prices at the restaurant have been considerably marked up by 'incredible' amounts.

Perez explained: "Bottles worth £1,000 would be sold for up to £3,000, for example.

"Of course you can charge people whatever price you want, but it's pretty immoral when the quality of the food and service does not match the price."

The 30-year-old ex-employee also claimed that the glitz and glam of the steak restaurant is just for 'show'.

"|I think people there want to show how much money they have, almost everybody paid in cash."

Following an altercation with a chef in the staff canteen, Perez told the news outlet that he was taken to HR and lost his job after eating his own avocado and rice.

Perez revealed that staff members aren't permitted to eat food from the canteen after 5.30pm, but explained: "I arrived with my own food at 5.35pm and took a plate and the chef started shouting at me telling me I can't eat from the canteen."

He went on to say: "I tried to explain that the avocado was mine and that I was just taking a plate and some cutlery and he accused me of being aggressive and called my general manager."

Perez was then told 'not to return' the next day.

Many celebs have frequented Salt Bae's restaurants, including the likes of Naomi Campbell and David Beckham, to name a few.

However, the restaurant itself holds some pretty scathing reviews.

One customer on TripAdvisor wrote about the restaurant, ranked number 20,491 out of 23,811 in the capital: "Terrible food. Meat was not at all tasty. Ended up going for a £5 kebab after a £300 bill...this place is the biggest joke in London."

Another chimed in with shock over the extortionate menu prices: "Insult to humanity. Worst food, worst service. Paid over £1,800 for three of us."

"Poor quality, smelly meat, small portions. Rather spend £50 in the local restaurant, will be better! Never again! Stay away, it's a death trap!"commented a third.
