England and Scotland fans given World Cup pub boost but 42-year-old drinking ban remains

Both nations head there for group games, and their fans will want to drink

An American law change that would help England and Scotland fans who've travelled to the US for the World Cup drink for longer appears set to go through, not there'll be no happy hour at the pubs.

The World Cup starts pretty darn soon and both England and Scotland have qualified for the tournament, with them even playing some of their games in the same stadium.

Scotland's first group game is against Haiti and will be held at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, though sadly the time it'll be on TV in the UK is two in the morning.

They've got their second group game against Morocco there, while England's second group game against Ghana will also be there.

No doubt fans of the Three Lions and the Tartan Army will be descending upon Foxborough to support their nations, and a recent development means any celebrations will last longer.

According to NBC, local politicians have approved measures which will allow pubs and bars in the area to stay open an hour longer than their licence permits.

Many places shut at 1am, some go another hour, but this extra boost means the ones that close their doors last will be able to stay open until 3am local time.

It means matchgoing fans won't be short of a place to drink in the obviously inevitable event that England and Scotland win all their games.

However, any fans hoping to wet the whistle before a game might be dismayed to learn that for the past 42 years Massachusetts has banned happy hour and there are no plans to change that.

The fans will just have to take their joy from their teams instead.

It pays to know the laws and customs of a place before going there, and fans going to the US had best be careful.

The Foreign Office has warned that since laws vary between the American states what's legal in one might not be in another, and making a mistake could put your time in the country at risk.

They said: "While you are in a state, you are subject to both that state’s laws and national (federal) law. Not following all US state and federal laws can put your visa status and future travel to the US at risk.

"You are expected to have a copy of your ESTA or Visa and proof of identity with you at all times."

For example, when England travel to New Jersey to play Panama at the MetLife Stadium, walking there is actually illegal, and if you're hiring a car in New Jersey you'd better know it's also illegal to fill it up with fuel yourself.

Meanwhile, for the Three Lions' opening game against Croatia in Texas, fans had better be sure they don't bring more than five sex toys with them because that US state assumes if you've got six or more then you're planning on selling them.

In most cases the police will have more important things to deal with, but it's best to know the laws and what to avoid.
