England may boycott the 2030 World Cup after Gianni Infantino controversy
FIFA has announced proposals to set up a private company to run its competitions. And, it has been said these could have links to Donald Trump’s extended family.
Basically, football’s world governing body basically wants to create a new commercial subsidiary to run its main events (such as the World Cup) and external investors would be able to buy stakes in it.
This announcement under the leadership of Gianni Infantino has led to major backlash globally and it’s now feared that England could end up boycotting the next World Cup, set to take place in 2030 (while the women’s is next year).
UEFA’s 55 member associations are already set to hold an emergency meeting later this week to discuss the controversial proposals and the Football Association (FA) has said that it’s ‘deeply concerned’.

While FIFA says the move will allow more money to be distributed to the football associations all over the world, there’s fears that the private investors could have too much influence in competitions.
According to reports in the Financial Times, UEFA condemned the plans, saying it takes it ‘extremely seriously’ and that it ‘crosses a line that football’s governing institutions should never cross’.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has already shown his dismay with FIFA previously, having boycotted the World Cup final earlier this month in protest at various controversial moves – such as the suspended red card.
And the FA really doesn’t seem happy either, making it known that it had not been consulted before FIFA released its proposals yesterday.
So, it’s reported that it won’t be much of a surprise if at least the possibility of a boycott doesn’t at least get raised at this emergency meeting.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has also criticised the plan, saying the World Cup is ‘not a product’ and belongs to fans and not investors.
A senior source added to BBC Sport that the threat posed by FIFA’s plan is one of the biggest the sport has faced, equating it to the controversial European Super League in 2021 that ended up scrapped within 48 hours.
The FA’s Statement
“We were completely unaware of this proposal and have no substantive details, including what the proposition actually is, and what conditions are attached.
“Based on the limited information, we are deeply concerned about the lack of process and governance to get to this point, and the apparent substance and principles involved.
“When the proposal is shared in the full and transparent way now promised by FIFA, we will make our views clear, and comment further.”
It’s widely reported that the possibility of a boycott of the next World Cup could arise when the FA meets with the rest of the UEFA meetings.
CONCACAF Statement
The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, has also criticised FIFA.
“CONCACAF was only made aware of this matter through media reports and, subsequently, via a media release,” it said in a statement.
“We are deeply concerned by the lack of due process.
“We share the disappointment of many within our region and the game that this level of detail has been designed and shared publicly before any discussion with the relevant governance bodies and stakeholders has taken place.
“As leaders within football, we are the custodians of the game. Collectively, FIFA, the Confederations and every Member Association have a responsibility to always act in the best interests of the sport.
“Every decision we make must be guided by good governance, robust processes and long-term stewardship.
“This is the framework within which CONCACAF operates.
“We trust that all within the FIFA family will act in the same manner.”
