Oh sure, we’re only watching the Olympics for the sports and to cheer on our teams.

No, let’s be honest, it’s also all the drama (Mick), we love it. From the GOAT Simone Biles' savage digs at her ex-teammate to athletes getting sent home from the Village for breaking the rules.

And obviously, we’re always routing for the athletes at the Olympics, no one wants to see them do badly.

But there was a shocking moment yesterday (2 August) when one competitor was disqualified after a bizarre feud with their opponent.

Riner had already picked up gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and of course had the crowd backing him when he landed a winning move on Tushishvili.

But the Georgian didn’t seem to take it too well as when he ended up laying on his back and the Frenchman’s win was called, he pushed his leg upwards.

This then essentially lifted Riner up by his crotch and sent him backwards onto the floor.

Tushishvili then got to his feet and seemed to push the bloke’s head into the canvas before walking away.

But the champ wasn’t having that and attempted to hold on to him, with the Georgian then seeming to push him back down with a thrust of the hips.

Officials then gave Tushishvili a red card for this bizarre behaviour with a Eurosport commentator saying: “What is this aggressiveness? This is not OK. This will get Georgia disqualified.”

The pair eventually shook hands but it was confirmed that Tushishvili did get disqualified.

The International Judo Federation (IJF) said in a statement: “Following the incident that took place at the end of the quarter-final between Teddy Riner (FRA) and Guram Tushishvili (GEO) in the +100 kg weight category, the behaviour of the Georgian judoka was against the 'spirit of judo,’ an ad hoc disciplinary commission was called immediately together to investigate the situation.”

It was decided that Tushishvili is suspended from the individual competition, isn’t allowed to compete in the repechage and is suspended from participating in today’s (3 August) mixed team event.

The athlete is also suspended from participating in any international judo competition until the IJF Disciplinary Commission meets to give a final decision. There are going to be further investigations conducted to ‘determine what happened’.

And as for Riner, he went on to pick up the gold for the men’s +100kg judo.
