Lewis Hamilton explained why he speaks with an American accent despite being British

The F1 star opened up on why he sounds American

British F1 star Lewis Hamilton has lifted the lid on the origin of his twangy American accent.

Getting into on-track matters first, recently, the 39-year-old hasn't been able to live up to his impossibly high-standards as Mercedes has battled with new Formula 1 regulations.

This resulted in Hamilton failing to win a single race in a given season in 2022 - for the first time in his career.

While Max Verstappen appears to have taken over the F1 game with his third world title in a row, a shocking report has emerged.

Sky Sports News has today (1 February) reported that the Mercedes factory is set to be briefed by chief executive of the team, Toto Wolff, ahead of the announcement that Hamilton will reportedly leave Mercedes and join Ferrari for the 2025 season.

Although Hamilton signed a new deal with Mercedes in August last year, his future is now believed to be unclear.

He penned a new Mercedes deal for 2024 and 2025 but apparently there is an escape clause in his contract.

Now, off the track, non-F1 fans have trouble escaping his accent, more than his actual driving.

The race car driver was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, but said his American accent naturally developed due to moving the US as a teenager.

During Sky Sports F1's 2019 series 'Small Talk', Hamilton was asked by a young fan: "You sound a bit American. Why is that?"

While laughing, Hamilton revealed: "I have a really mixed accent, I don't know why. I think what it was, was that my dad always gave me a lot trouble, because he said I would mumble so I’d always stutter my words when I was younger.

"Then I started traveling to Europe, so I was a lot in France and Italy and I started speaking a lot of Broken English.

"Then I spent a lot of time in an American Airbase when I was young.

"Naturally, all the music I listen to is American, so sometimes you just accidentally pick up the twang."

Hamilton also stated in another interview: "This is where my heart is - I am fully British."

He added: "I guess over time I will do more positive things for the country. I go to these races and I lift the British flag proudly.

"There is no-one else in the sport that has raised it so high."
