Tyson Fury's current husky voice is result of sparring accident that changed how he sounded forever

Tyson Fury didn't always have his trademark raspy voice

Whether he's screaming in celebration or singing 'Sweet Caroline' at the top of his lungs, Tyson Fury's husky voice is instantly recognisable.

He's both louder and larger than life, standing at a massive 6ft7ins while weighing 262lb as of Friday's (17 May) weigh-in, which comes ahead of his highly anticipated clash against Oleksandr Usyk tonight (18 May).

But believe it or not, Tyson wasn't actually born with his trademark raspy twang and was actually once a soft-spoken giant. Take a look at this:

Fans reckon he sounds a lot more like his little brother and former Love Island star Tommy in the footage from his younger years, rather than his dad Big John who shares the same husky tone that the Gypsy King has now.

But he didn't just go to bed one night and wake up with a hoarse voice that never went away - in fact, the Brit boxer says the way he speaks is actually the result of a very painful injury.

Tyson revealed that an overzealous sparring match with a mate ended up damaging his vocal chords for good.

During an interview on the YouTube series The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani in 2021, the 35-year-old heavyweight revealed that although he sounds the same as his father now, he didn't used to.

Tyson explained: "It wasn't always like this though, this isn't my original voice.

"If you go back at look at interviews from like 2010 onwards right up until about 2016, I didn't have this voice," he said.

"One of my good friends, Ty Mitchell. We were sparring and he hit me in the throat real hard and I developed a blood clot in my throat. It messed around with my vocal chords so this is why I talk like this now."

"So it sounds just like my dad," Tyson continued. "I can even hear it myself, we've both got the husky voice."

He then cheekily added: "Some would say it's quite sexy, I've been told."

Tyson joked that he may have to 'punch Tommy in the throat' so that he can also get the signature Fury husk to his voice.

The champion boxer also previously revealed that he was supposed to undergo surgery to remove the blood clot following the incident in 2015, but revealed that he ultimately backed out.

However, this isn't a decision which he come to regret.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1 back in 2019, Tyson said: "I was supposed to have it removed and I got too afraid. I think it sounds better anyway, there's more pain in it."

Either way, let's hope that Usyk steers well clear of his neck region to avoid causing any more damage when the pair face off in the main event at the 'Ring of Fire' in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, later this evening.

The Gypsy King has promised fans there will 'fireworks' and seen as though there is an eye-watering purse at stake, it seems sure that the clash will be an exciting one to watch.

Fans have been waiting quite a while to see Tyson take on the Ukrainian boxer, 37, as the long-awaited match-up was postponed in February after the Brit copped a serious injury above his right eye during training.
