Damning comment Thomas Tuchel made to Jordan Pickford during heated argument

The German boss clearly wasn't happy with the keeper's decision making

England kicked off their 2026 World Cup campaign with a strong win against Croatia last night, but it wasn't without its hiccups.

After Harry Kane had twice handed the Three Lions the lead against the side who finished third in 2022, they were pegged back to 2-2 at half-time, before a much-improved second-half performance saw them earn the three points in Group L.

Although fans will have been left impressed by one of the best England performances in recent memory, seemingly inspired by Thomas Tuchel's half-time team talk, it seems as if the German manager wasn't always happy with what he was seeing on the pitch.

The attack certainly delivered but the defence was found lacking at times, and the former Chelsea boss took issue with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in a moment which wasn't captured by the cameras.

As England looked to play out from the back, Pickford got an earful from his manager after playing it the wrong way, something which reporter Geoff Shreeves picked up in the stadium while the rest of us were following the cameras.

'Do as I told you'

"Just now Jordan Pickford was on his left side and off balance and still picked up. Thomas Tuchel was straight out to the touchline and said 'no, put it out to the right back, you don't go that side,' reports the Express.

"Pickford had a little go back and Tuchel was not impressed. He told him 'you know what you're supposed to do, do as I told you'."

Now, match-going football fans will know that this is a regular occurrence and nothing to be too worried about, especially since the Everton man was able to keep a clean sheet in the second 45 and help England pick up an important victory.

But after a 'complicated and confusing' first half, it seems as if both Tuchel and his assistant Anthony Barry were far more content with what they saw after the break, which was kickstarted by that early Jude Bellingham goal to make it 3-2.

Following the game, Barry said: "I think [there was] a lot of nervous energy early on. Maybe that should be accepted, and maybe expected in the opening game of a World Cup.

"From there, then we made some decisions where the energy was not free in our mind, playing long when we should play short, playing short when we should play long, really not playing through the gaps so not allowing us to accelerate our game the way we wanted to.

"Then you think the penalty would free us up, allow us to play more like us, look more like ourselves, but again we fall back into some fearful patterns, and yeah... we've always been able to rely on set pieces.

"We get the second goal again. We're hoping that's the moment that would allow us to move forward in the game, but okay, we concede the second goal later on, and now we have to speak about that at halftime."
