Thousands of Instagram users have reported being unable to send or receive messages on the social media app, according to reports on Downdetector.

More than 10,000 people in the United States and hundreds more in other parts of the world took to the website to complain about issues with their DMs earlier today, 11 March.

The issue appeared to arise in the middle of the night, with most reports starting to emerge at around 2am as people in the countries like India woke up and discovered problems with the app.

Around 71 percent of complaints said they were having difficulty accessing the app, while a further 20 percent reported server connection issues and 5 percent said their Instagram feed or timeline was not loading.

Are Instagram DMs not working?

In the comments, several users on Downdetector reported it they were struggling to access their DMs, and were unable to send or receive messages on the Instagram app.

Elsewhere, people have been taking to other social media sites like X to complain about the tech issue.

"Are Instagram dms down or... am I cooked," one person questioned, while another added: "Are the messages delayed to show???"

A third wrote: "Instagram messenger calls and DMs is down again."

"Today feels long because Instagram is down and I cannot doomscroll," a fourth posted, alongside a broken heart emoji.

Another noted that the app stopped working right in the middle of the conversation, writing: "Instagram went down in the middle of 3 different conversations," as another joked: "Instagram went down when my friend starting questioning me, THANK GOD."

Is the Instagram outage linked to the US-Iran war?

In their complaints, many people have suggested they believe the outage, particularly those in the US, was caused by the ongoing war between the States and Iran.

One person said they believed it was Iran 'targeting enemy technological infrastructure,' but there is absolutely no evidence to suggest this is the case.

Meta has not commented on the fact Instagram is not working for thousands of users, however the number of complaints appear to be dwindling at the time of writing, which could suggest the problem is either fixed or close to being fixed.

There have been a number of much more widespread outages in recent months, particularly when Cloudflare went down, taking hundreds of popular websites all over the world with it.
