Legendary actor Tom Hanks has taken on a multitude of beloved and highly commended roles throughout his acting career, from his iconic titular role in Forrest Gump to his heart-wrenching portrayal of Viktor Navorski in The Terminal.

Alas, it appears the Hanks fan train has ground to a halt as viewers of the latest episode of The Graham Norton Show have been flooding onto Twitter to brand the 66-year-old 'annoying'.

On last night's (Friday, 16 December) episode of The Graham Norton Show, Norton was joined by upcoming Whitney Houston biopic star Naomi Ackie, Doctor Foster actress Suranne Jones, The Thursday Murder Club novelist Richard Osman and 'the one and only' Tom Hanks.

Hanks was appearing on the show ahead of his upcoming movie release, A Man Named Otto – a comedy for which the official synopsis reads: "When a lively young family moves in next door, grumpy widower Otto Anderson meets his match in a quick-witted, pregnant woman named Marisol, leading to an unlikely friendship that turns his world upside down."

As well as discussing what it was like to act with his son in the film, Hanks opened up about releasing his 'inner grouch', prompting laughter from both the audience and other guests on the sofa.

Hanks' storytelling prompted laughter from the other guests and live audience, but not all viewers had the same reaction.

However, some viewers were left far from amused by Hanks' appearance on the late-night chat programme, and have flooded onto Twitter to voice their opinions.

One user said: "Tom Hanks is really annoying and overbearing. #TheGNShow."

"Tom Hanks is a very annoying man. Talented but annoying… and just creepy in Elvis #GrahamNorton," another commented.

A third wrote: "I LOVE Tom Hanks as an actor, he’s in a lot of my favourite films but he’s deffo a ‘I’m the main character’ person #GrahamNorton."

While another responded: "I noticed this when Anthony Joshua was on a few years ago and Tom Hanks repeatedly interrupted him. It was so annoying."

Some viewers accused Hanks of being 'obnoxious'.

While some keyboard warriors have been quick to critique the acting legend, others have defended Hanks' honour and praised his appearance on the show.

One YouTube user wrote: "Tom Hanks is really one of us. God I love him."

"Tom Hanks seems as great of a person as he is an actor," another commented.

While another resolved: "Tom is a living legend, end of story."
