The writers of Rick and Morty have been criticised after making a joke about the 9/11 terrorist attack.

The controversial gag was made during an episode titled 'Promortyus' which aired on Sunday (10 May) in the US and will air on Thursday (14 May) on E4 in the UK. During the episode, Rick and Morty fly around an alien city and opt out of attacking two identical towers ahead of them.

Narrowly missing the buildings, Rick says: "Honestly, I'm proud of us for not."

Morty replies: "Totally, would have been cheap."

The pair instead fly over a harbour and proceed to blow it up, with Rick directly addressing the World War Two atrocity, saying: "Pearl Harbour on the other hand..."

We then see Rick and Morty sat at breakfast with Morty's parents, Beth and Jerry.

When they're asked about what they had done, Beth says: "So, you did a 9/11?"

Morty replied: "Almost did a 9/11. We... we went with a Pearl Harbour. We're pretty classy."

Since the episode was aired, some viewers have criticised the writers for appearing to make light of the 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York, which killed around 3,000 people.

More than 2,400 people also died during the surprise Japanese military attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbour in December 1941.

Taking to social media, one person wrote: "Not Rick and Morty with the 9/11 jokes."

A second wrote: "@RickandMorty this season sucks and on top of it your making 9/11 jokes? How about instead of making two shows that suck make one good one?"

While another added: "Is Rick and Morty still doing 9/11 jokes? Because wow, that's so funny in 2020."

Though not everyone was so offended by the joke.

Praising the episode, one fan wrote: "Got a hearty laugh outta the @RickandMorty 9-11/Pearl Harbor joke this week."

A second put: "THIS RICK AND MORTY STARTED OFF WILD LMAOOOOOOO. 'I'm sorry I didn't 9/11 Pearl Harbor before breakfast'."

A third commented: "Much better episode this week! The 9/11 scene and of course who could forget Jerry's beekeeping."

While another added: "9/11 and Pearl Harbor and that was just the opening scene. Yea this Gonna be the best @RickandMorty episode."
