Oscars viewers hit out at ‘eating disorder’ joke within first few minutes of ceremony

Oscars viewers hit out at ‘eating disorder’ joke within first few minutes of ceremony

One joke in and people have already criticised The Oscars

Viewers of this year's Oscars have criticised the ceremony for the opening joke from host Jimmy Kimmel.

He started the ceremony with a skit where he pretended to be in the movie Barbie as she sits on a bench and weeps, but some viewers are not happy that one of the first things out of the host's mouth was a joke some think makes light of eating disorders.

After Robbie's Barbie tells him he's beautiful, he quips that he hasn't eaten for three weeks, a joke which didn't go down well with some.

"Literally the FIRST joke of the Oscars is about having an eating disorder. Like come the f**k on," one wrote of Kimmel's opening joke.

"Not Jimmy Kimmel starting the Oscar’s with a disordered eating joke," another tweeted of their distaste at the first joke of this year's Oscars.

Plenty weren't impressed by his opening joke.

Others criticised the performance for replacing a moment in Barbie where someone's beauty is seen with a joke about an eating disorder.

One viewer called the move 'f**king stupid and I hated it', while another sarcastically quipped 'awesome' at the beginning of Kimmel's opening skit.

Plenty more were just really confused why these jokes were being used to open the show.
