Fans are urging Hollywood to get its act together and make a legacy sequel to The Mummy series.

The original movie landed over 20 years ago, with Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and John Hannah saving the world from the very undead Egyptian high priest Imhotep.

Since then, two more films were made, 2001's The Mummy Returns, which starred Dwayne Johnson as the Scorpion King, and then The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008, though neither ever quite hit the heights of the 1999 original.

But with Fraser set to make his long-awaited return to the big screen, fans of the trilogy are begging for the gang to get back together for one more ride.

Universal Pictures

Pleading with producers to pull their fingers out and make it happen, one user said: "All this #BrendanFraser momentum will surely lead to a Mummy sequel, and I am here for it."

Echoing the love, another chimed in: "Give us the Mummy sequel we deserve, instead of Indy 5 or Tom Cruise stuff! Completely underrated franchise."

A third asked: "Can we just Halloween/Terminator The Mummy and do a new sequel to the '99 film that ignores all the other sequels and lets Brendan, Rachel and Stephen have some fun for a couple years?"

While yet another fan added: "I just came out with a billion dollar movie sequel idea! Brenden Fraser and Rachel Weisz return to The Mummy Franchise set in 1945 in the closing months of WWII.

"Hitler wants an undead Army to turn the tide of the war!! The Mummy: Dead 2 Reichs. NAZI MUMMIES!!!"

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a fourth Mummy film almost happened following Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but Universal opted to make 2017's ill-received Tom Cruise reboot instead.

A 2019 article reads: "Universal opted not to go forward with a fourth film that would have seen the O'Connells face off against Aztec mummies in South America with Antonio Banderas playing the villain, and instead set its sights on a cinematic universe."

Last year, a petition was started to resurrect this canned fourth instalment of the bonkers series.

The petition reads: "The Mummy 4, rumored to be named The Mummy: Rise of the Aztecs, would have brought the series to South America. With the failure of Universal's Mummy reboot, now would be the time to make The Mummy 4.

"Have Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return. (Even if they are side characters and the movie would be more based more on their son.)

"Bringing Antonio Banderas in as the main villain would definitely be a nice touch also.

"This would be the perfect chance to correct the mistake that was the horrible Tom Cruise Mummy abomination, resurrect the careers of older movie stars, it also gives the chance to make new ones."

It added: "Also having The Rock returning as The Scorpion King would be the icing on the cake."

Following recent renewed interest in Fraser following his casting in Martin Scorsese's forthcoming movie Killers of the Flower Moon, interest in The Mummy 4 petition has also accelerated, with the number of signatures appearing to almost double in three days to reach more than 4,700.

Come on, guys. Do the right thing.
