Batman Forever star Val Kilmer said cancer has made it difficult 'to talk and to be understood' in a new documentary which offers an insight into his life and health. Watch the clip below:

The 61-year-old actor had to have a tracheotomy - an incision in the neck to help with breathing - during his recovery from throat cancer.

Val was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015, only revealing his diagnosis two years later.

Despite finding it hard to communicate due to the cancer, he said that he wants to tell his story 'more than ever'.

In the trailer for the documentary, Val says: "I was recently diagnosed with throat cancer.

"I'm still recovering, and it is difficult to talk and be understood. But I want to tell my story more than ever."

In the clip, Val uses a voice box device to help him speak. The trailer features video footage from Val's earlier years and excerpts from some of his films.

Val says: "I spent decades finding my voice through characters. I've tried to see the world as one piece of life.

"I have behaved poorly, I have behaved bravely... bizarrely to some.

"My name is Val Kilmer; I'm an actor. I've lived a magical life and captured quite a bit of it. I was the first guy I knew to own a video camera.

"I see myself as a sensitive, intelligent human being. But with the soul of a clown."

The YouTube IGN video caption reads: "For over 40 years Val Kilmer, one of Hollywood's most mercurial and/or misunderstood actors has been documenting his own life and craft through film and video.

"He has amassed thousands of hours of footage, from 16mm home movies made with his brothers, to time spent in iconic roles for blockbuster movies like Top Gun, The Doors, Tombstone, and Batman Forever.

"This raw, wildly original and unflinching documentary reveals a life lives to extremes and a heart-filled, sometimes hilarious look at what it means to be an artist and a complex man."

YouTube users took to the comments to show their support and excitement for the upcoming documentary.

One user wrote: "How cool is this!!! Like a documentary, based on self-shot and personal video diaries, and not just a camera crew following everything. Definitely looking forward to watching it."

Another reflected: "Wow, this should be a mirror for many people who think that fame and fortune is everything in life."

A third said: "Hearing him talk at the end breaks my freaking heart. One of the greatest actors of our generation, and his voice is gone. Such a tragedy."

Val had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on July 7, 2021 and is scheduled to be released on Amazon Prime on August 6, 2021.
